Why make taco seasoning from scratch when you can buy it in a packet?
One might wonder… why make your taco seasoning from scratch, when you can easily buy it in a ready to go packet? I am going to tell you why it is better to make you taco seasoning from the spices you most likely have readily available in your pantry!
Let’s take a look at some of the ingredients that are in this widely popular Old El Paso Original Taco Seasoning packet.
Maltodextrin is an artificial sweetener, usually made from GMO corn. It is a white powder that many food manufacturers use to increase flavor and shelf life of food. It can affect gut bacteria, spike blood sugar, and contain traces of pesticides if made from GMO corn.
Natural Flavors are another ingredient on the list on the packet. Research has shown that when “natural” appears on food packaging, people tend to form positive opinions about the product, including how healthy it is. Natural flavors aren’t much different than artificial flavors in terms of chemical make up and their effects on the body. Up to 90% of the ingredients that make up natural flavors contain chemical solvents and preservatives.
Sodium content can be high in the pre-made taco season packets. I use Celtic Sea Salt in my taco seasoning which is much healthier than the salt you will find in most of the pre-made packets.
Making your own taco seasoning from scratch is so simple!! You can control the flavor and also the sodium level. I promise you that this taco season from scratch recipe takes less than 2 minutes to put together and taste better than any taco seasoning you’ve ever had from a packet!
